Basic Mold Removal Information

Mold remediation is a process that people who have or may have mold in their homes should know about. It is good to know about the many methods that can be used to deal with mold. That is why you should be aware of not only the methods that can be used but also some of the equipment that you will need.

Having some idea about mold is best before you start thinking about mold remediation. Household dust will commonly have mold spores in it. When there are large quantities of the spores then they can become an issue. Mold growth is aided by things like moisture, time and nutrients. You should also be aware that prolonged exposure to mold can actually cause some health problems.

Knowing about mold is a start but knowing how a mold problem is assessed is also a good thing. Visual checks are the first and simplest of the assessment methods. Other intrusive measure will only be taken if there is thought to be mold but it cannot be seen. When the assessment is being done the source of moisture will also be look for. If the mold and its moisture source can be identified then there is no need to have other types of testing done.

There are some easy and simple things that you can do yourself if you have mold on a small scale. All you need to do is provide sunlight, good ventilation and use things like non-porous building materials and household chemicals to eliminate the mold. Unfortunately if it is a bigger problem then you will have to get a professional in.

You can use some other methods to eliminate mold as well. If you have a wet vacuum you can use that. You should make sure that there is sufficient moisture for the vacuum to work. You will also need to clean the vacuum well after using it. You could also use damp wipes for surfaces that are non-porous. Be sure that the surface will dry quickly after using the wipe so that mold will not grow again. Many people use HEPA vacuums at the end of the whole remediation process. Materials that had mold on them should be stored in impervious bags in order to keep the spores from getting to the clean areas.

A number of different pieces of equipment are used in the remediation process. Most of the equipment will be used when assessing the problem. Humidity gauges, moisture meters, borescopes and thermographic cameras are but some of the items that will be used.

Mold remediation will either be carried out by a professional or by you. Before it starts there will need to be an assessment of the problem to see the extent and who would be better suited to deal with it.
