Steps for Water Damage Restoration

If your home is experiencing standing or leaking water, call a water damage company immediately!  The damage from the water will only get worse the longer you wait, and most likely you do not possess the required equipment and skills to properly remove, dry, and repair the affected areas.  If you called the right restoration company they should be there within the hour to begin the process of restoring your home.  Here are some of the steps they will take.

  1. Ensure all safety precautions are taken such as turning off the electricity to the affected area, making sure the structure isn’t going to collapse, and wearing protective gear.
  2. Remove all debris and affected material from the area.  Everything that is salvageable will be cleaned and put back once the damage is repaired.
  3. Ventilate the area.  Fresh, circulating air will discourage the growth of microorganisms such as harmful bacteria and mold.  Windows and doors should be opened to allow proper ventilation of the area.  Dehumidifiers may be required later, but first it is important to allow proper airflow.
  4. Identify the source of the leak.  If it is hard to find, professionals will use special equipment that can quickly detect the source.
  5. Remove unsalvageable material.  Everything that is wet must be removed from the house.  If the flooding is particularly bad, it may be necessary to remove the carpet, pad, and even the sub-floor material.  The restoration team will make this assessment when they come to it.

These are just the initial steps that a professional water damage team will take; there are many more, which is why I recommend calling 911 Restoration for all your water damage needs.
