Water Damage Repair

By Hanit Stern

The next time you think of delaying fixing a leaking pipe, or put off a maintenance check for your home or office consider this…

Water damage describes destruction caused by water intrusion to places where water can damage systems or equipment; water can harm the infrastructure of a building, function of an electronic system, and ruin personal affects. According to the Insurance Information Institute, the national statistics in 2007 for water damage claims accounted 22% of claims, with the average cost of $5,531 per claim (Insurance Information Institute, 2010).

Water damage can be a result of a bust or frozen pipe, appliance malfunction (such as dishwater outflow), clogged sink or toilet, broken window or roof, and heavy rain or snow. Floods and hurricanes can cause extreme and devastating water destruction.

Water damage does not only harm materials, it can also be a health hazard. It can create mold and mildews; some molds are poisonous to humans and animals. Respiratory illnesses, infectious diseases and allergies are some of problems mentioned in the 911Restoration article, “The Benefits of Water Damage Restoration Companies.”

The Insurance Information Institute provides several ideas to prevent water damages; simple things like inspecting hoses and faucets, shutting the water supply when you are away, knowing the location of the main water valve in the house and checking pipes. All those small preventive measures can help with the in-home maintenance. Caulking windows, inspecting the roof, checking the sprinkler system and installing gutter guards can be helpful with outside maintenance.

However, if water damage does happen, 911Restoration suggests several important points to consider when looking for a restoration company. First the company should have a 24 hours emergency number (fast reaction time prevents further damage), second the company should have professional staff that can provide referrals, third the company can deal with any type of cleaning, restoration and repair, and last a good restoration company can help their clients with their insurance claim in case of substantial damage.
